Today was MOPS (Mothers Of Preschoolers), and I was asked to be on a panel of moms talking about our “frugal” strategies. It was totally nerve-wracking. Don’t get me wrong. I have NO problem speaking in front of a large group. None. However, when I was asked, I felt kinda funny.

Frugal? Yeah, I guess I am. I mean, as I’ve mentioned before, I HATE spending money. I’m cheap. But, did I even have anything to contribute to the panel?

We were supposed to introduce ourselves, tell a little about our family, and give a frugal tip. Hmmm. A tip. THAT is where they got me. I figured that “Don’t spend money you don’t have” might be a little too obvious. How about “Plan your meals,” or “Only use cash”? We’ve heard those before. I wanted to be unique. I didn’t know who else would be on the panel, but I figured there would be another couponer besides me (turns out, there was).

SO, I decided to go with my garage sale obsession. Here was my tip (you’ve heard it before): Only take $5 cash with you. If you spend more than $5 at a garage sale, then you are probably not saving any money. OF COURSE, there are exceptions. But, chances are you didn’t really NEED the $25 item that was calling your name when you only had $5 in your pocket, right? Right. It’s a garage sale for goodness sake.

And then I told them about this trip:

Everything in the photo for only $4.50.

I told them a little about this one:

$6. But, I really didn’t break my rule. I had money left over from . . . something (surely).

I totally forgot to mention this one:

$1 - and you should see what I did with it!

Oh, and I didn’t say anything about this one either:
$3.10. And, I love all of it.

Oh, there were SO many more Friday Hauls I could have told them about, but they weren’t interested. Guess what they were interested in. Coupons. Yes. Of course.

And, of course, I had plenty to say on that subject. Man, I talk too much. I really do. Someone needs to stand behind me with a Mute button to control my mouth.

Once again, it’s a good thing I have this blog, because I sure do love to share my opinions!

Oh, AND I offered to host a little “coupon class” type of thing at my house next Monday. If you live nearby (like, I actually know you IRL), you are welcome to show up with your Sunday paper at 9:00am! Hopefully some of the other coupon savvy moms will show up so that I don’t have to attempt to share my limited knowledge by myself! Yikes! (K and K and L . . . that means you.)

You did great this morning :) I thought the discussion was pretty interesting and I know I’m looking forward to picking some veteran couponers brains next Monday. I feel like I’ve just scratched the surface so far!

Wish I could come! *Ü* I would love to meet you in real life.

Looking at your hauls, I’m envious of the double basket thingie you found in the last photo (don’t know what they are called). I would love to have something like that in my house, but in the stores they are $30 minimum and too much for this cheap mom.

You have real life experience and because of that you have much to share. Maybe you could put together a handout you could email to those of us who might be interested in what you have to share (and aren’t local?) hint, hint…but no pressure!

I have to admit that for me coupons have just never made sense. You usually have to buy an expensive name brand to be able to use a coupon. But garage sales…that’s where the real frugality lies!
