I’ve been awake since 1:14 am.

It’s now 5:37 am, and I have been awake since 1:14.
I awoke just before 1:14 am when I heard a clock alarm blaring from the across-the-house-and-upstairs (empty) guest room. Thinking it was just my dream, I tried to ignore the incessant cry. Then, the noise broke through my subconscious and I realized that Cole must have set the alarm when he was playing upstairs yesterday afternoon.
This would be the same Cole whose puke I cleaned up at about 10:30 last night.
Ah, the irony of the situation is that my friend Sarah had asked a question on Facebook yesterday: “Do flu shots really work”. My answer was, “The people in our family who got them ended up getting sick anyway. We don’t bother anymore, and we almost never get sick anymore.” (Don’t you love the grammar?) Anyway, I then revisited the thread after others had posted their opinions to say, “My doctor would agree with Abbie. He always tells us that IF we get it, it wouldn’t be as severe. But, we are gambling about whether we will get it or not. I’d say that if you are already prone to being sick, then get it. We just rarely get sick. But watch. Since I said this “out loud”, we’ll get sick, right? {sigh!} God likes to put me in my place.”
He does. He did.
Cole puked.
Now, we know this isn’t actually the flu, but it is kinda funny (in a not very ha, ha kinda way) that the SAME day that I bragged about being so healthy, my sweet child puked all over the carpeted floor and bedding of his newly decorated bedroom.
Aaaaaand apparently he chewed and swallowed too much gum yesterday. On top of having lunch at McDonald’s with Dad. Plus, apples, chicken, oatmeal and popcorn. Apparently.
Not a virus. Just an upset stomach. But, I doubt that I will get to go to church today. ARGH.
And, can I just tell you how incredibly thankful I am that I received a carpet cleaner for Christmas this year? Truly thankful. I’ll be thankful again today when I move his furniture around to reach places that we were unable to reach last night. Fun times.
SO, after having cleaned up puke, I climbed back into bed around 11:15 and promptly fell asleep. I was desperately tired.
And then, the alarm clock incident. It took just a few minutes to take care of the situation, but by the time I snuggled back into bed, I was wide awake.
My mind was going a bajillion miles a minute.
Thinking about:
- my friend who was just diagnosed with cancer
- my very young brother who is engaged to be married in a few months
- my younger sister whom I haven’t seen in a couple of years and whom I will never stop praying for
- my shockingly poor treatment by the gal at the customer service counter at Safeway (and should I meet with her to resolve our differences?)
- how thankful I am that the kids in our public school district get to participate in an off-campus Bible class and grateful that I am a small part of that
- why I don’t buy organic . . . and how funny it is to me that there is such thing as organic mac and cheese and organic juice boxes
- why people keep asking me when I’m going to go back to work. And, will I go back to work? And, if so, when? And, what will I do? And, can’t I just keep staying home to take care of my family since we are obviously making it work?
- how much I love my son’s preschool teacher and how his face lights up when we talk about her
- bacon
- my son’s flat Grant project and how cool it is that my mom is going to send something special for him
- puke on carpet
- what I’m going to say about the Bible in 90 Days when I get up in front of the whole church next week to talk about the challenge
- how weirdly obsessed I’m becoming about my new Etsy shop and wondering if I have time to make up some more cash envelopes this weekend
- how we can be missionaries in our own towns without having to leave the country . . . and how vitally important our ministry is
- how thankful I am that 13 years ago my husband (1) had graduated from college, (2) had a good job, (3) had lived on his own for a few years and knew all about those expenses, (4) was very responsible and able to take care of his very young and dependent new wife . . . and how I wish that on certain family members who are getting married soon
- how nice my husband’s arms are
- coffee
I’m sure I thought of more, but I just got a whiff of the coffee beans, so I must end this post.
Hoping for a nap this afternoon . . . just before I head over to my in-law’s house for dinner. My mother-in-law must have read my meal planning post!

Sorry about he upset tummy. My oldest has puked on his birthday for the last 2 or 3 years in a row. It’s his trademark.

Your post made me smile. It’s something I understand, but have few girlfriends to list the random list of things in my head like you did. My husband would just read this post and go yeah… that sounds like you when you babble… can’t you just go to sleep?
I found your blog a few months ago while I was attending Financial Peace University. I was looking for envelopes for the Dave Ramsey system and made your free ones. I wish I could say that I use them but the debit card and an excel sheet keep me more on track than cash in my pocket book does.
Anyways your blog opened the door to couponing and this time the couponing stuck. I found my own couponing method, found a local blog to follow and I’ve saved a lot of money! Your blog rss feed is at the top of my Google Reader and I’m excited to peek in to see what new creation or new story you have.
I am so happy you’ve opened an Etsy store (I now know what an etsy is) and I can’t wait for a reason to buy one of your fabulous pattern creations.
Ok I will stop acting stalker-ish. I hope that you understand that those of us lurking out there in cyber space appreciate what you do and today is the day it’s come flowing out of me.

This post made me smile too. Love that bacon was on the list among so many other things.
Just wanted to encourage you: Don’t feel pressured to go “back to work.” It’s a privilege to get to stay home with your kids and if you’re making it work - don’t feel bad about it!

It’s nice to know that other people have such random and sometimes weird thoughts while trying to get to sleep.
I thought I was the only one! Hope you have a great day!
