Hi fellow coupon ladies! I know that many of you like to check out my posts before heading to the store, just to see if I saw something that you might have missed in the coupon match-ups this week on our favorite coupon blogs. Oh, the pressure!! LOL!
But, I’ll try to help out just a bit by showing you what I’ve been buying.
First of all, the dreaded/loved $10/$50 Safeway coupon came out this week, and I am completely ignoring it. TOO MUCH PRESSURE! There are so many great daily deals that I just can’t get my brain to organize itself enough to make sure I don’t forget anything. Therefore, instead, I am doing several smaller purchases throughout the week. This kind of gimmick sale (the daily deal thing) is what gets us all in the store every day . . . which is exactly what Safeway wants. But, stick to your list!!
First of all, let me show you what I did at Safeway on Wednesday night (date night while the kiddos are in Awana!):
So, I bought the cheap milk @ $1.99 x 2 = $3.98
AND, 8 boxes of cereal @ $1.99 each - $1.00 MC (1/30 RP, or the printable linked up at FLNW) - doubler = 49¢ each. Ladies, never pay more than 75¢ a box for cereal unless it is your luxury item. I never “stock up” unless they are 50¢ or less . . . except for Kashi. I love me some Kashi.
Mitch and I went together, so we did two back to back transactions to take advantage of the doubler.
= $7.90 (ignore the bad math in the photo)
That same night at Rite Aid:
4 bags of Chex Mix @ $1.50 each - $1/1 MC from the Safeway Joy of Football Book = 50¢ each. And, I earned (4) $1 +UP rewards. Money maker and great Super Bowl snack.
3 packs of paper plates and 1 pack of bowls $3.99 each and BOGO = $7.98 after BOGO savings. Used the $3/2 Video Values coupon and (4) $1/1 MC from Safeway Joy of Football Book = 98¢
2 packs Stayfree were BOGO, plus I had a BOGO coupon, which made them free!
I also purchased two personal items that are not pictured. If you are a couponer and have been reading your blogs, you know what they are!
Moneymaker!
AND, 2 bags of M&Ms as a filler so I could use a previously earned +UP reward.
I spent a $1.99 +UP reward and 44¢ OOP, plus I earned another $9 in +UP rewards. Hee, hee!
Oh, and I found another link to that little “personal” moneymaker, so I printed off two more and hope to do the deal again. Or, get it for free at Walmart. Whatever. Woot! {blushing}
Yesterday, I swung by Safeway to pick up 4 packs of hot dog buns @ 59¢ each. They freeze well if you use them in a decent amount of time, and we will.
And back to Safeway this morning:
Today’s Daily Deal is the Nabisco crackers for 99¢ each, limit 2. I used a $1/2 MC (do not double) to make it 2 boxes for 99¢!
Ketchup is $1.49 with the in-ad coupon. Not a stock up price, but really not bad at all! I needed it.
Lucerne cheese is $3.99 for the 2lb brick. By the way, Tillamook is $4.99 with the in-ad coupon. NOT a stock up price, but I’ll probably go back and get one if I have money at the end of the week because we are Tillamook cheese snobs.
The Mission tortillas are $1.29 with the in-ad coupon. I used (2) $1/1 IP (no longer available), which doubled, so 4 packs for $2.16 or 54¢ each. These freeze well, and $1.29 is a pretty good price for tortillas, although I have gotten them for free before. If I have $ left, I’ll grab more.
Old El Paso Taco Shells are 99¢ until Feb 8th. Use the 50¢/1 MC from 1/30 SS and use the doubler to make 1¢. NO ONE is talking about this!! You heard it here first, folks!! I’m totally going back to snag some free taco shells, baby!
Johnsonville Brats are $2.99 with the in-ad coupon. I used the $2/2 MC from the Albertson’s ad + the doubler = $3.48 or $1.74 each. We are huge Bratwurst fans in this house! This is a cheap meal or two!
I bought some Rancher’s Reserve cube steak for $2.20, minus the $2 Ranchers Reserve coupon = 20¢. HOWEVER, the coupon didn’t work!! Blast! I give up on that coupon. Someone linked up to a Pioneer Woman sandwich this week that uses the cube steak and I can’t wait to find it again and try it!
Braeburn Apples @65¢/lb = $1.46
Bananas @ 65¢/lb = $1.70
Total OOP was $17.45 . . . and it could have been $15.45 if that meat coupon had worked. Grr.
But, still, it is cheap meat. I had an issue with this coupon last week and I tried to go back and get $2 back, and the lady at the customer service desk DID give it to me, but she also made me feel like a thief! (Her name starts with an L and ends with an A, and yes, she is one of the curly headed ladies, for you locals.) She was making up a coupon policy on the spot and telling me that I was violating it because the coupon is supposed to be one per household and I had already used one. Except that she couldn’t show me where it said that. And, it doesn’t. But she still made some INCREDIBLY rude remarks about me as a person. All the while, I was trying to stay polite and at the same time figure out WHERE this policy was so that I could continue to be an honest couponer. It was ugly (at least in my head, it was). NOT something that I care to repeat this week, that’s for sure. And, I wish I could report her comments and behavior without coming across as a tattle tale or a trouble maker, but I can’t, so I’m just gonna let it go.
Thanks for listening. I feel better.
What’s next?
I’m going back to Safeway on Sunday to get my Tostitos for 39¢ a bag, plus you know about tonight’s run for more cheap crackers and free taco shells. I might get some more Oscar Meyer hot dogs for 24¢ each (using the MC in the Albertson’s ad plus the doubler), but I’m pretty well stocked up and that deal will come back around. I do have a $1/1 MC for the Reynolds wrap, which would make it 99¢ each after the in-ad and doubler.
I’ll probably hit up Rite Aid again (woot!) and look for that ice cream deal while I’m there.
Did I miss anything?

Thanks for the photos and inspiration! I am totally going back for free taco shells - wahoo! I also had trouble with the Rancher’s Reserve beef coupon. I purchased two beef stew meats ($3.75 and $3.78). The guy in produce was ringing up and pushed one of the coupons through after I noticed it beeped and would not take the money off. He could not get the second one to go through so I said no problem and asked him to take off the second packet of beef. (I was going to make my stew with only 1 lb. beef if I needed to at $1.75!) I handed the meat back to him and he said that it was fine and pushed the second one through.
I read the fine print over and over (standing in the meat section!) to see if there was ANY limit to the use of the coupon and there was NONE! It simply limited it to one coupon per package of meat, which is the same for any coupon - one item per coupon.
I didn’t try it again today since the Safeway I went to today had slightly larger packets of beef and I was looking at only purchasing in the 1 lb. increments to get the most use out of the coupon. I will try again before the coupon expires though because it makes for some very inexpensive beef.
Have a great day and thanks for listening to me now!

I had 2 coupons from the SAFEWAY book and they didn’t work at Safeway… but the cashier said “we have been having problems with these not working” and she manually pushed them thru. 2 of the meat ones. I too read and re read and re read the coupon (cuz the albies was $2 off of $10 and this is plainly just $2 off…)
I bought the same meat!

Safeway ALWAYS hassles me on coupons. I hardly ever shop there anymore because I feel like a criminal even when following their coupon policy. Thankfully there are a lot of other stores in my area that are much more coupon friendly so I’m still able to save a ton.

You know what I would do? I would complain to the company who’s putting out those coupons and tell them that the retailers are making it hard for customers to use them. It’s not like it’s Safeway’s money so what’s it to them?!!
I’d also be straight up and tell that crappy Safeway employee that couponing is a huge industry and you have no intention on quitting just because she seems to take “personal” issue with it. If you mention her “personal opinion” has no bearing on your couponing she might actually realize she just needs to do her job and shut the front door! If she can’t show you company policy then it’s a waste of your time and you should not be forced to listen to that. Ohh that makes me so mad for you!

That’s a bummer deal about the meat coupon… I’ve had issues with almost all of my coupons out of the football book, but only in Dallas! West Salem Safeway has been great. My friend used 5 of the meat coupons at once just yesterday there. I scored 12 free containers of Skippy peanut butter, a bunch of free or almost free Campbell’s Chunky soup and select harvest soup, and some free Ronzoni Garden Delights pasta!

Hey Kelleigh: slightly unrelated but what is a good price on Kashi? I haven’t always bought it but it seems like a better choice for my kids then some of what is out there for cheap or free but I don’t know what prices to look for on it. Thanks!

Ah, that’s a good question. I’ve gotten it for FREE (http://kelleighratzlaff.com/life/the-great-cereal-stock-up-of-2010-round-one/), but I’ve paid for it, too (http://kelleighratzlaff.com/life/shopped-a-little-today/). I don’t remember what I have paid in the past, but I would probably pay $1 a box, because I LOVE it! I actually wrote to Kashi to tell them how much I loved it and they send me coupons!!
YAY!

HeHe Kaliegh my husband and I were hovering around in Rite-aid last Sunday deciding whether to purchase the ahem, free items. We decided we didn’t need the items that bad. I’m not completely weird about that stuff but seriously, what will the cashier think when you’re buying it in bulk?
hehe! Anywho you should consider addressing the Safeway employees rude behavior. The employees are there to provide customer service not make personal attacks and if they cannot do that then they need additional training!

I agree with everyone else…go back with the meat coupon! I watched a cashier with a group of coupons from the lady ahead of me, and she was near swearing with the coupon booklet coupons. As I was talking to the cashier, she said that it’s been a real hassle since they’re set up to take that penny off and THEN take the cents of the coupon off; certain coupons (house branded ones) don’t make it through all the way and only take the penny off! My Safeway with the experienced checkers) will just push it through without a hassle if you watch it closely.

All my Football coupons have beeped, but they have been pushing them through. Haven’t tried the meat one yet.

Great blog, I just found it! Will definitely make it a regular read
You should absolutely say something about the Safeway lady’s comments. That’s not OK, especially since you’re following the rules. I had a clerk at another local store hassle me once; I had a free Tillamook cheese coupon that came directly from Tillamook. He said it was fake (I can’t remember what he actually said to me, but it something like that), he refused to take it, and refused to call a manager over after I told him it wasnt’ fake and explained how I got it. He didn’t believe me, he was SUPER rude, and started talking really loudly about my trying to rip them off so everybody behind me could hear! I was *mortified*!!
I was so upset over it, that I sent their corporate office an email, and I had a call from the store manager within a couple days! He told me to come back, ask for him personally, and bring the coupon so he could personally enter it into their system as being valid, and he offered me a free brick of cheese - no coupon required.
I ended up going to Haggen instead, and they took my coupon no problem, so clearly it wasn’t fake! Let Safeway know what happened, so hopefully you won’t go through it again.

I agree 100% with everyone else. You should call corporate, and report what happened and how you were treated. These “people” continue to work and have jobs, and treat people as such. Without you calling and letting corporate or her manager know, they will never know and assume she is doing a great job. I have really strong feelings about being treated that way by anyone. I am a customer, with, or without coupons. No one deserves to be talked to like that, EVER! Especially by someone that is getting paid to work in a customer service position. If she doesn’t like people, or dealing with them in a appropriate manner, she should go drive truck or something!! Oh, and I have used the meat coupon several times, sometimes 2 together, and it has beeped EVERY SINGLE TIME. They always read, ask a manager, but always put it through since it is obvious it should work.
Love your blog and your great deals!

Um…is it the (whispering) KY Yours & Mine? LOL Girl, you’re married. Don’t blush!!!
And I’d totally call Safeway to complain!
