Tortillas (and how to get the big ones for super cheap!)

22 March 2011 1,903 views 2 Comments

I’ll make this quick. Safeway has a weekend ad (came out in the Sunday paper, but you can pick one up at the door or customer service desk) that has a store coupon that makes 10 ct. Mission Soft Taco tortillas 99¢. Total stock up price. There are not any manufacturer coupons out there, anyway, but 99¢ is my SERIOUS stock up price for tortillas.

Side note: Our family absolutely goes through tortillas like it is nobody’s business. I even tried to make them myself once (which is totally not worth the hassle, but was really fun). When I see them at 99¢, I buy as many as I can. Just yesterday, I opened up the last package from my freezer, so this sale couldn’t have come at a better time.

Anywho, my local Safeway store is completely out of the 10 ct. Soft Taco size. This has happened before, and I just asked to substitute the 8 ct. Burrito Size, and they said yes, so I asked again this morning! Tip: Ask the nice, male manager/shift manager/person in charge. DO NOT ask the grumpy lady. DO NOT push your luck and take a 16 ct. DO NOT grab the low carb, and certainly DO NOT take a different brand up to the customer service desk. Simply grab ONE package of the the 8 ct. and take it to the MALE manager type person and smile sweetly while you ask hopefully.

Works every time.

I bought 10 packs of 8 ct. Burrito size tortillas for 99¢ each by asking for a substitution.

These freeze very well! I just stick them in the freezer as-is (because they will be gone in a couple of months), but some people put the packages into a freezer bag before popping them in the freezer. Whatever. I don’t think this size would fit in a freezer bag. To thaw, leave them out on the counter for a couple of hours, or, do as I do and pop them in the microwave for a minute.

If your nice, male manager-type denies you, ask for a raincheck (absolutely!!). Then, go back later in the day when a different male manager-type is working and ask that dude for a substitution. You never know!

The benefit of asking for a raincheck is that you NEVER know if a new manufacturer’s coupon will come out next week and then you can get your tortillas for uber-cheap!

Hope this helps some of you!!

Totally wish I had read this post first: I just came back from Safeway and they were all out of the tortillas. Never thought to ask for a sub or raincheck :(
Since we’ve started doing taco night every week (instead of ordering pizza) we go through these things faster than I could have imagined. Pioneer Woman has an a-maze-ing Shrimp Quesadilla recipe that I use for all the Philly Cooking Creme that’s been free/cheap lately.

You know that nice male manager at our Safeway substituted the 16 count for me last week :) I asked for a rain check as they were all out (they are always out when I go!) and he offered to substitute another size and asked how many packages I wanted. I said three and he brought back three of the 16 count packages! We go through tortillas like nobody’s business here too…
