I’ve been working on getting my family room put together and feeling more cozy. Do you remember this post? Well, Layla Palmer did a little virtual redesign for me, and I’ve been slowly but surely putting things in place.
And, this is what Layla suggested:

Which, of course, I loved.
However, soon after I sent Layla the before pictures, my husband purchased a new television. That is a story unto itself, and the whole thing makes me too exhausted to retell it. Let’s just say that he has strict instructions to “Just Say No” to people who need to unload things to get themselves out of financial hardships. Because, uh, well, it does the opposite to us! My husband is just SO kind. {sigh} Enough.
So, we had a monstrosity to deal with, not to mention a gaping hole in the “TV wall” with a bajillion cables coming out of it, so we had to revise the plan. This is what we came up with:

And, then she showed me what it would look like if I purchased a second white chair and painted the walls blue.
And, this is what I have going so far:
The mirror will eventually be replaced with a larger mirror, or we might just turn it so it is vertical. There is definitely too much space between the top of the table and the mirror, though. The lamp will come eventually.
We have to hold onto our couch a while longer. You know, ’cause of the TV and the bathroom flooding thing, not to mention new tires. {sigh again} However, the couch is really working for me, so I am not concerned. The throw pillows are the ones that came with the couch and huge chair that used to be in the room, and I think they really work!
I printed out those photos today and put them in frames. I can’t believe it took me so long to do this! I love those pictures!
Remember these garage sale frames? 75¢ each! Mitch thinks I need to put the burlap behind the pictures, but I think I’ll either leave them as they are or do chicken wire and clip the pics up with mini clothespins.
My shadow. SO cute. Precious, really.
Your first look at “the monstrosity”. A HUGE 52″ television. And, we don’t even have TV. We just watch DVDs around here . . . like Loony Tunes.
BUT, notice that I changed out the green fabric for the burlap (since I have enough of it!). See the green box up there on the table next to the receiver? Remember it? We now use that for our remote controls. SO cute.
(Pay no attention to the large glass container on the mantle. I just forgot to take it down.)
We moved the curtain rods up to 108″ and hung new curtains. If you have ever been in the market for extra long curtains, then you know that $21.95 is a STEAL for 108″ curtains! And, they are the thermal kind, which will be great in the winter. They are just a touch too long, but that is easily fixed. Oh, and I have to iron or steam them. Whatever.
Look down there on the bottom right. Do you see the magazine stand? Not an incredible decorating statement, but useful! And, I put some black ribbon around the lamp shade to spiff it up.
Mitch was very happy when he came home and saw what I did today! YAY! There is still more to do, though. We are on the lookout for a couple of ottomans for under the windows as shown in Layla’s plan. And, we thought it would be nice to have some storage ottomans to tuck under the entertainment stand for additional seating for games at the coffee table. It’s a work in progress, but I’m enjoying the journey!

Love it! But hey, if you ever decide to sell your couch or love seat… call me. I actually just want the cushions… you don’t WANT to know what happened to ours!

My computer is in a little closet in the hallway. Ironically, that is where I had originally planned to keep the computer way back when we first drew up plans for the house. It has been a scrapbooking closet, gift wrap closet, craft closet, and now my work station. But, hey! I really does work for me!

Your room looks beautiful. I love the wall colors too. Would you mind telling me what paint colors you used?
Thanks!

The entire house is painted Desert Fawn by Miller Paint. The blue wall is painted Pottery Blue by Miller Paint.
I think I’m going to go with Layla’s idea of painting those 3 walls (fireplace, TV and chair walls) a light blue so that the chairs don’t get lost on that wall. AND, I might slipcover the chairs, too! Looks like it would be fairly straightforward.
Thanks for asking!

Great new look and really only by moving furniture. It’s amazing what you can do without a lot of money.
It looks great.

Wow, it just looks awesome! I love all those 3D drawings she did too! Way fun!

Check your TJMaxx for the ottomans.
Our TJMaxx (Athens, Georgia) has some cute footstool/square ottomans on sale (clearance section) for $25 each, right now. They are about 2′x2′x2′. The OTHER section of TJMAxx also has several smaller ottoman cubes for under $40, right now, too. They are about 1.5′x1.5′x1.5, or smaller.
Should be VERY easy to slip cover. (not that I have an extra $25 right, now, but thought you might!)

Thanks for the suggestions! I saw them there yesterday. There was ONE cube that look promising, but I’m looking for two. Hmm. I DID walk away with two ottomans for under the windows that I think I am going to take back. We’ll see! They are leather topped, open bottom, and I think that some upholstered ones would work better. They are super classy, though, and the price was right. Oh well!
I LOVE TXMaxx, so I’ll keep my eyes open!

you can’t go wrong with any of layla’s designs - i have that couch!! and a loveseat that matches!! and two recliners that match all of that!! it’s too much “matchy”!!! but the couch is very comfy! i like that you used the pillows on the other chairs!! good idea!
thanks for sharing your pictures and your room with us.

Hey Kelleigh!
Ya know, the more I think about it- you could also just paint the wall behind the chairs blue, and re-paint the fireplace wall Desert Fawn.
That might make more sense. (less painting!)

Your room is lovely! I can empathize with the tv situation. We painted the cords/cables the color of the wall and they almost disappear. Enjoy your transformation!

Love it. Can you tell me where you found your curtains? I too have tall ceilings.
Thanks - Becky

Nice work on the family room transformation. I’m eagerly waiting my designs back from Layla on my living and dining rooms. She gave you some amazing ideas to work with. Good luck with the updates.

It looks wonderful as do all of Laylas projects, but I would spray paint that floor lamp a hammered black or a matte black…

Oh, I TOTALLY agree, Pat! I’m looking for oil rubbed bronze spray paint. Where in the world do you get that stuff?

The TJ Maxx store in Corvallis has a ton of upholstered ottoman’s for cheap right now. They had about 10 varieties to choose from. Take care-Amber
