It’s Tuesday, so I thought I’d give you a little Tutorial Tuesday!

But first, let me be real with you. I’m gonna share something that might shock you. Look away if you have to. It’s not pretty.

This was the state of my desk/office while I was working on the following tutorial:

desk

{Apparently, I’m a genius.}

Who am I kidding? My desk STILL looks that bad, and it has been a week! “Dust the office” was on my list of chores to complete today, and it did NOT happen. Goodness gracious.

Rest assured that I can still create beautiful things, even if my desk looks that bad. Let me prove it to you.

KelleighR-JewelryBox-tp_LRGToday, I’m working with my brand new Jewelry Box Template Set, which is available in my tiny little store at Shabby Pickle Designs. I’m the guest hybrid designer there this month, which is pretty cool! SO, if you want to grab this particular template, you’ll have to jump over to Shabby Pickle and pick it up. I’ll be bringing it home to my huge ol’ store at The Digichick in November!

In the meantime, there’s a little challenge going on at Shabby Pickle in this thread. I’m going to sweeten the pot a bit and donate an additional prize to the creator of my favorite Jewelry Box, using this template. Post your creation to that thread by the end of October to be entered to win a $10 Gift Certificate to my TDC store! (Edit: This challenge is closed, and my template is now home at The Digichick!)

Now, on to that tutorial . . .

Before I get started, let me direct you to some pretty good tutorials (if I do say so myself!) found at The Hybrid Chick:

Where to Start – offers suggestions for basic materials to get you started with hybrid.

Using Templates – guides you through the process of using my templates from downloading to adding digital paper, and preparing to print.

Borderless Printing – shows you how to find your borderless printing option on your printer . . . or at least get you headed in the right direction.

Now, print your project! Of course, you can use digital paper or simply print the lines only version on some of the patterned paper or cardstock in your stash.

I chose some yummy paper from the Kaleidoscope line by My Mind’s Eye that has been sitting in my stash for eons. I love this paper. So pretty! Of course, I didn’t want those big, ugly black lines to ruin my project, so, in Photoshop, I changed the foreground color to something a little bit purple-ish, then filled the lines layer with that color! (I covered that in the Using Templates tutorial.) If you are working with the pdf file, you can make your lines less noticeable by printing with the lightest amount of ink possible. Fast Draft is always a good idea.

Here is my printed page. Look at my lines! Can you see them? Ye gads! I totally meant to print on the solid side of the paper, but I just loaded it into the printer the wrong way and then I had to squint to see those little lines. {sigh} But, the plus-side is that you can’t see them on my finished project!

Next, I scored the dashed lines and cut on the solid lines.

Then, I folded the edge that will eventually be the pretty band around the inside of the box, and glued it down with a strip of adhesive. I did this to both sides.

3fold

I folded all of those scored lines.

There are tapered edges on both sides of the inner box (man, this is hard to explain!). You are going to run your adhesive right along the edge as shown.

5glue

Now, fold up the inner box and tuck the tapered edge underneath the rim of the box so it is nice and smooth. (Look closely at the picture!)

6tuck

Admire your box.

Test it to make sure it is designed wonderfully. (The answer is YES, it is.)

Now, pop a pretty Prima on top and take some lovely pictures to show off a little.

Post your creation all over the place (and tell people about me!), including that thread for a chance to win a $10 GC to my BIG store!

Did you like this tutorial? Should I do more of them?

Oh! You say you were wanting me to show you how to make a pretty apple out of my new Perfect Pumpkin Template? You are in LUCK! I’m scheduled to show off that little project on The Hybrid Chick Blog on October 10th!! I promise, it’s coming. Go grab the template and pick out your paper and be ready!!

Edit: Here’s that tutorial!! Eeek! SO gorgeous.

Wow it is messy (we are friends so I feel I can say that).

I am getting really inspired by your designs and feel like I am ready to try one of them out. I need to find something for Christmas. Thanks for the ideas.

Hey Kelleigh! I admit I didn’t post a comment, but in my defense, I was eager to check out another post in my reader and I sort of zoomed by. I love your tutorials, love your personality and love that you are willing to share everything honestly. Your desk makes you human and I can feel a sense of relief that your desk gets as messy as mine. What’s that saying, a messy desk is the sign of a creative mind? You are one creative lady!

    Hugs!
