You Don’t Have to be a Genius to be a Couponer!
I hear it almost weekly:
- “I wish I could use coupons, but I just don’t understand how you get those savings.”
- “All of that math just confuses me.”
- “I’m not smart enough to use coupons like that.”
And, my personal favorite:
- Stunned look on face - “I don’t know how you figure that stuff out. I’m confused just listening to you.”
No kidding! I hear it all the time from my friends in real life, friends on facebook, and friends posting on my blog. But, I’m here to say that you don’t have to be a genius to be a couponer! (But, thank you for the compliments! LOL!)
- If you can add and subtract, you can become an extreme couponer.
- If you can read a blog, you can become an extreme couponer.
- If you can use scissors, you can become an extreme couponer.
- If you can click the print button with your mouse, you can become an extreme couponer.
You really can. You just have to DECIDE to do it, and then determine that you are going to give it your best shot for at least a month.
Stay tuned to find out how I transformed from a coupon virgin to an extreme couponer.

I enjoy (and am encouraged by) your coupon posts. For me, I haven’t decided to coupon yet because I have the impression that the things I buy aren’t going to have coupons … Like, I don’t buy any Kraft products. I only buy Tillamook cheese. I have a brand name chicken that I like (called Smart Chicken) and milk (Clover), and I shop at a local chain that doesn’t even do catalinas. Do you still think couponing would work for me?

Hi Tiffany! I’ll certainly address some of your concerns in upcoming posts, however I’ll answer you quickly.
1 - Extreme couponers are flexible. I never bought Kraft products until I started couponing. I only bought Tillamook, too! However, I’ll gladly use free Kraft cheese these days, and the last time I bought Tillamook, I paid $2.49 for a baby loaf (and I stocked up: http://kelleighratzlaff.com/life/the-friday-haul-2/).
2 - Extreme couponers are not brand loyal. Of course, you can prioritize what is important to you. I must have fancy toilet paper. Non-negotiable. If you must have your brand name chicken, then go for it!
3 - Extreme couponers are not store loyal. That being said, I shop at Safeway because it is essentially the only grocery store in town. I’m sure that you could make your store work for you!! It’s not an ideal situation (I’ll explain about stores in a future post), but you can make it work!

Thanks for the response! I’ll be looking forward to future posts. It sounds that with my brand and store loyalties, extreme couponing may not be compatible, but I might still find a way to make it work for me.
