Running Machine Update - Wk 5 DONE.
If you follow me on Twitter, or you are a personal friend on Facebook, then you know it has been almost 6 weeks since I first told you that I wanted to become a running machine. I’m so excited that I am actually doing this!! Friday marks the start of the 6th week of the Couch to 5K program (since we started on a Friday).
Let me sum up what has happened so far:
- I bought new running shoes during Week 4. I went to a real running store in Salem to be fitted, and the guy pulled out these ginormous shoes that are one size bigger than my regular size. Hello? I can’t have any more babies or my feet will grow again and pretty soon I’ll be able to fit into Mitch’s shoes. This would not be sexy. I really like my new shoes, though! I haven’t had any feet problems, and they feel really good! I’m very glad I went to a real running store instead of trying to fit myself, because I would have bought my regular size and then I’d be dealing with black toenails. Again, not sexy.
- I have purchased actual running clothing. Well, okay, to be fair, I bought some dri-fit shirts at Goodwill (woot!) and some Danskin brand running stuff from Walmart. I look cute while running, sometimes. I also bought my own hat so I don’t have to wear Mitch’s cinched down old hats from his college days. This is good. I have a tiny head.
- I have discovered that I really enjoy running, and have gone on many runs on days when I didn’t HAVE to because it wasn’t part of the running program. I’m pretty proud of that!! I would go so far as to say that I feel gross and lazy if I didn’t run in the morning. I think I might be a real runner!
- I plan to run in a 5k in March, April and May, so far. We’ve already marked them on the calendar!! Note to self: Register.
- According to the scale last night, I have lost 7.5 pounds. This morning, the dumb scale said 6.5. Whatever. I’m not really seeing the change in the way my clothes fit, unless I was so stuffed into my jeans before that this new “comfortable without having to be stretched out” thing is the evidence. Honestly, I am a bit ambivalent about the weight loss. To me, it is about feeling good and accomplishing something. Plus, I plan to be a hotty by my 34th birthday (June), and I have a little time to do that. I DO want to look good in a bathing suit by April 1st, so I might actually start a diet soon . . . or maybe Pilates. (Did I mention that one of the reasons why I want to be a runner is so that I can eat whatever I want and then burn the calories by running (and getting the workout over with)? It’s true. I want to be able to EAT, people. That is why I’m exercising.)
I ran for 20 minutes straight today without any walks and without puking! This was one of my original goals. I have revised that goal to running 30 minutes straight. I should be there in about 2 weeks. This is SO cool!
I know there are others of you who have started or re-started running, too! Please share your progress in the comments! I’d love to hear your motivating stories!!

Ah…Kelleigh…I am proud of you! I, however, have no motivating story for running. I have never ran more than a quarter of a mile in my life. I cheated in school when we had to run the mile. I have, however, found a love for Zumba. I suppose I now understand the runner’s high a bit better.
I love to eat, too, and that is also what I use as motivation for doing stuff. I think…I burned 300 calories (or whatever), so I can eat 300 calories (of chocolate/ice cream/whatever).

You are doing it and looking cute at the same time. You are inspiring!
Have you ever tried SparkPeople.com? I use it to track my calories. It’s free and a great tool to see ways to change my eating.

Kelleigh, you are just an amazing woman! Congratulations on setting and working towards your goal. I love how honest and funny you are at the same time.
I’ve got no motivating stories for you. I am NOT a runner and have no plans to be. (when I ran in school, it hurt the “girls” too much and I’ve developed a distaste for that sensation, so running equals not fun for me. I am so proud of you though! I’ll be cheering you on virtually as you run your races.
Go, Kelleigh, go! *Ü*

Hey there, WAY TO GO!!! That is so awesome. I actually started running last summer too, but when it got to cold out in the morning, I quit and went back to exercising inside. Although I have to admit, I never got to running 20 min. straight! It was more of a walk, jog, walk, jog, walk, jog, walk, joooooooooooogggggggggggggggg (maybe 10 mins) So, I say way to go!! Your doing awesome. I might start back up again when the weather is nicer. The cold wind just kills my ears. Oh, and when you eat, just make sure your eating more protein and fat than carbohydrates!! You’ll loose weight ALOT faster and feel alot better.

I am seriously impressed! I have always wanted to be a runner. I have no stamina, I cannot run for two minutes straight. It’s sad. What does that say about my heart. Cardiovascular fitness is a goal of mine. I will check out the Couch to 5K Program.

That’s awesome! We used the same program and we’ll be running our first 5K tomorrow. I’m really nervous since it’s freezing cold here!!! We’re going to bundle up and probably look like burglars with our faces covered in scarves!

Wondering if my non-numbering issue is fixed. We’ll see.

I’m really not eating THAT much different. I know that once I start seeing a change on the scale I get more motivated to eat more fresh veggies and fewer saucy meals. I guess I’m a lot more aware of what I am putting into my body. I don’t deprive myself of anything, although I have cut back a lot on coffee and wine so that I don’t get dehydrated.
I know, isn’t it SO motivating??! I was just thinking this morning that I have lost somewhere between 6.5 and 9.5 pounds (depending on the time of day and the scale) since I started running 8 weeks ago. And, really, it has been without dieting. If I tell you I lost 1 pound this week, it doesn’t sound very impressive. However, when taken as a whole, it’s SO exciting! This slow weight loss thing is really working for me!!
Oh, I hope you do try Couch to 5k! What a difference it has made for me!
