I signed up for my first 5k!

It’s official! I paid the money and I’m committed. I’ll be running in my first 5k this Saturday, April 17th. Eeeek!

I’m super excited and kind of shocked that I’m actually doing it! I mean, I just started the couch to 5k program about 11 weeks ago (right?). I finished it on March 26th, at which point I was able to run for at least 30 minutes, which is a little less than a 10 minute mile. That last day, I ran in the SNOW!!

We were at Eagle Crest in central Oregon (near Redmond/Bend), and it snowed! It was a magical run. I opened the door to find snow flying all around and a herd of deer crossing the road right in front of me. At the 15 minute mark, I turned around on the path and there was my husband running up the path toward me! It was the first time we were able to run together, since he is usually watching the kids while I run. This time, we left them with their Aunt and cousins and enjoyed the time together. The next day, we ran on a trail, so of course it was my first trail run. SO beautiful, and so much fun! I think that we have finally found the hobby that we enjoy doing together, although it may be a few years before we get to run together on a regular basis. You know . . . we have kids to supervise!!

Amazing that I ran in the snow. I am SUCH a wimp, and this Pacific NW weather has always been my excuse not to exercise. Not any more!! I’m thankful that Jodi made me run in the rain that first week!! And, I’m thankful for my cute hat that I wear on all of my runs!

Right after we got back from Eagle Crest, we took off for Hawaii. You have to understand that I had been visualizing myself running in Hawaii for months! Every time I got to a certain spot on my run, I would picture myself running along a beach or trail with the cool wind blowing through my hair enjoying the lush greenery of Hawaii.

REALITY: We ran one time. It was hot in Hawaii. And humid. I was not prepared. I don’t own warm-weather running gear, yet, and I didn’t bring anything but my regular pants and long-sleeved shirts, so I wore some of Mitch’s draw string shorts and a baggy t-shirt. SO not sexy. At all. Plus, I didn’t do so great on my run. However, Mitch (my incredibly athletic husband) didn’t do so great, either, so I feel better about that. After that first run, we gave up. I was too much of a wimp.

We arrived back home last Wednesday night, and first thing Thursday morning, I went for a run. I was so nervous that I may have lost all that I had worked toward, especially with that 5k coming up. Thankfully, my run went very well, and I ended up running at a faster pace than I typically do, so I added a bit of time. THEN, I ran on Friday, where I decided to stretch my run out for 35 minutes. Easy-peasy! I went to mapmyrun.com and figured out that I had just completed a 5k. SO, on Sunday I ran that route again in 32.39 minutes! My goal for this Saturday is to run my first 5k in around 35 minutes or so. I’d love to be closer to 32, but I realize that I might end up at the back of the pack for the start, which will be interesting.

Want to get the weight loss break down?

I weighed myself this morning, and I have officially lost 10 pounds since I started running. Keep in mind that I gained about 3 pounds in Hawaii! LOL! SO, realistically, the last couple of pounds might come back and then fall off again. Whatever.

I am seeing results! I am now able to wear some of the clothes that I had put in the back of my closet. I have this cute little jacket that I put on a few months back and my arm looked like a stuffed sausage in it. NOT good. I put it on a couple of weeks ago and it was loose!! YAY! In my arms!! I haven’t attempted the skinny jeans pile, but after I lose another 5 pounds I might pull it down from the top of my closet.

My next goals:

After I finish my first 5k, I’d like to start training for a 10k. Just because, why not? I like to have goals to shoot for. Even if I never run a 10k, it would be cool to be able to run for longer distances.

I was at a fancy luncheon once, and the gal next to me ate a piece of cheesecake then went back for MORE. I must have looked at her funny because she said, “I ran 8 miles today, so I think I can have seconds.” Yes, ma’am!! You certainly can!! THAT is what I want to be able to do.

AND, I’m going to start the 30 Day Shred. I might be insane to do this, but I am excited to see if it will help me lose the last 8 pounds!! Or maybe even more!

Now, I know that Allie Z. just started C25k, and a few more of you are getting back into running after a hiatus. Care to chime in with your fitness successes and goals? Leave a comment!!

Well done - you’ve done so well! The 10k is definitely achievable, particularly with your motivation levels!

I’m still being rubbish at running but as of next week, I get a second child-free morning each week and now that the weather is better I’ll get out more. I did run yesterday, felt dreadful but I managed about 4.5 k and it’ll be better next time! Hopefully!

Wow, Kelleigh! Amazing! I have C25K on my iPhone, and have yet to start… I did go out and buy some running shorts and a couple shirts that are washed and waiting for me to drag my * out of bed one of these mornings so I can go for a walk before DH leaves for work while the kids are still in bed. I almost got up and went this morning, but in my morning haze I rolled over since I heard it raining. Bad excuse. I need to just do it.

Oh, I need to know about your cute hat. Gotta look good if I’m gonna be out so early in the morning. :)

I’m really excited for you! You’re going to do awesome. I’m doing a 5k on Sunday. I’m doing C25K too, but I can only jog 25 minutes (and it’s the slowest jog you’ve ever seen). I seriously think I could probably walk faster than I jog, but at least I’m making progress.

I also plan on doing 30 Day Shred. I won a copy of it in a giveaway a few weeks back and it just came in the mail a few days ago. I’m really looking forward to it. The other thing I’m doing is Fort Wayne’s Smallest Winner, a weight loss competition similar to The Biggest Loser. We work out with a trainer 3 mornings a week at 6 am, we have Nutrition classes once a week, and we also take group exercise classes. In the last 2 weeks I’ve lost 9.8 pounds, but I still have 70 pounds to go! I’m sure that’s more info than you wanted!

Have a great jog on Saturday!

I am so impressed and proud of you for doing this, Kelleigh! You are an inspiration. I have never cared for running, but I’m in awe of those who do it and seem to enjoy it! Good luck to you this weekend! You CAN do it and do it well!

I wanna see you in your fancy hat!

Great job! Isn’t it nice (and surprising!) to be excited about something that is so good for your body?! I am training for my first 1/2 marathon, which is in 10 days, and I am just coming off a foot injury - my first! I had to stop running for almost a month and was fearing the worst, but I’m back running again and am so excited to be able to run this race. I also started running last summer, ran my first 5k and then 10k last year…and now this. Set your goals high, you can do it!

You’re so funny! You need to come and run with me. I think I’ve ran in more snow and wind these last 3 weeks than not. I’ve been running at 5:30am and there have been a few chilly mornings in the 20s. Thank goodness for Under Armour and for finding it on sale! Can’t wait to hear what you think of the Shred.

And yes you DO have to look cute while you run! What’s the point if you don’t?

    Oh hey, that’s me! Allie Z :)

Oh wow, that’s this week! 5k, look out! Is either Jodi or your hubby running it with you? That is just so exciting!! I’m sure the boys will be cheering you on!

I need to find a 5k in San Diego to run in June. I’m thinking doing my first 5k in Phoenix during summer isn’t such a hot idea (no pun intended!).

I’ve heard great things about the 30 Day Shred. I’ve also heard that most people do the Shred first THEN do the C25K! Sooo funny!

Holy crap! I just saw that 74,000 people have viewed your Envelope Tutorial. Are you kidding me?! WOW! You’re amazing for sure!

PS- I LOVE LOVE LOVE the visual of your hair blowing run in Hawaii - and then reality. Hilarious! God is so good that he lets us dream such things up… lol
