Bacon! Bacon, bacon, bacon!
Have I mentioned that I’m a fan of bacon?
Yeah, I know that it isn’t great for me. I still love it.
As much as I talk about bacon, it is a real treat for our family, so we really don’t have it that often. It is definitely a Birthday Breakfast must-have, and an every-morning-while-camping must have, though. Plus, you really can’t leave it out of Loaded Baked Potato Chowder.
When I find Bacon at $2.50 or less, I buy a couple. I would never, in a bajillion years, pay more than $2.50 for bacon. I’ve gotten it for free in the past, so it pains me to spend a lot of money on bacon. However, I do LOVE it, so I decided to stock up when I saw it on SALE at Safeway this week!
First, the picture of the groceries. So weird that I take pictures of my food, huh?
The bacon. It is on sale for $2.99 this week, plus there is a $1/1 MC (I think The Oregonian got it, but the Statesman didn’t). It doubles, but I’ll get to that at the end.
11 Bacon @ $2.99 each
used (11) $1/1 MCs
= $1.99 each (However it comes out to less than that! Keep reading!)
Milk: $2.49
Bread: $1.69
Cheese: $4.49 (oh, how I need a Tillamook sale!)
There is a BOGO meat promo this week, but it’s all of the expensive cuts. I am out of ground beef, so I wanted to get the 93% lean ground sirloin and wanted to pay about $15. See, I plan my trips. When I got to the store, they had the BOGO sirloin packaged up in ginormous packages (6 lbs. or more) that were all right around $30. Yikes! I told the kind meat dude that it would break my budget, and he offered to split one up. Wahoo!
SO, I ended up getting 2 packages of lean ground sirloin for about $2.50/lb (which is pretty good, but not freakishly awesome) and paid $15.97.
The small bottles of Franks hot sauce have been money-makers for me lately, so I was hoping that these would be, too. They weren’t though! They were just FREE with the FREE coupon found in a Sunday paper a while back.
Tip: It’s always a good idea to save your free product coupons for the first week of the month when the loved/hated $10/$50 coupon comes out. Remember that your total has to come to $50, AFTER you scan your club card, but before manufacturer coupons. Then, we knock it down with the manufacturer’s coupons! So fun!
My pre-coupon total came to just over $66. I used the $10/$50 coupon that came out this week, and then used $11 in bacon coupons. Add the doubler for another $2.00 off (doubles up to 4 coupons, and only up to 50¢ - available in Oregon and SW Wash.). PLUS, take $2.89 off for each hot sauce, AND I used $7.50 in Catalinas for the McCormicks deal (shown below).
Total spent was $27.03. Think of it this way: I paid full price for the bread, milk and cheese ($8.67) and the meat was a good deal, but anyone can get this deal (another $15.97). That brings my “normal people total” to $24.64, before the bacon and free hot sauce. A normal person would have paid $2.99 for ONE bacon, bringing the total to $27.63. That’s 60¢ more than I paid for 10 additional packs of bacon and 2 hot sauces. Make sense? Yeah, it pays to be abnormal!
I’m hoping this bacon lasts through camping season, but if I see another bacon sale (or get my hands on more coupons) I’m definitely getting more! For you stockpile skeptics, ask yourself how many packages of bacon you would go through in a year and just buy that much!
And, since it has been a while since I’ve posted my trips, I’ll leave you with this:
Free pasta, free sauce and cheapo/moneymaker spices.
I did another little trip in there for more free pasta, moneymaker spices and moneymaker hot sauce, but I didn’t bother with a picture.
Plus, I did this:
6 mini bags of ground coffee, a 200 pack of coffee filters and a loaf of whole wheat bread for 62¢.
AND, I purchased 12 lbs. of organic apples from Azure Standard for 63¢/lb (plus a bag of organic dried garbanzo beans to make hummus!). Locals, I belong to the co-op @ Bridgeport Farms and Gardens. I think I’m going to start buying 15lbs. of organic apples at the beginning of every month. It’s so nice to just buy the apples once and be done with it, plus they are cheaper than store bought! We have an open fruit drawer policy for our hungry boys, so sometimes I’m buying apples two or three times a week! This should save my sanity, right?
I still have $8 left in this week’s grocery envelope, so I’m planning to get in on the awesome Kellogg’s/free milk promo at Albertsons. If it works out, I’ll take a pic!
What are you buying this week?

It is not “weird” that you take pics of your food. I do the same thing! (or maybe that makes both of us weird?!) Your photos are always inspirational and exciting to me so keep it up!
I need to find it in print where I can use the manufacture coupons after the $10 off $50 coupon. Any ideas?
Also, there was a $10 CAT printing when you spent $75. Did you think about shooting for that or not? Just curious since I am working on my Safeway transaction! Thanks!

You know, I couldn’t find anything in my ad about that, and I didn’t see that any of the NW coupon bloggers were saying anything about it. KCL mentioned it,though, but their ad looks completely different than mine. If it DOES exist, I’m going to try not to be frustrated that I missed out!
I would have bought a few more FREE hot sauces!!

You have just saved me some more money! My Safeway used to be great at doing the $10/$50 before manufacture coupons, but then switched on me a couple months ago. Now I have proof it will work and I am off to get my scenario together!

Wahoo! It’s awesome to be armed with a policy, huh?
I actually buy 40 pounds of apples every month from Azure to feed my three boys (ages 7, 4, and 2). Sometimes they eat 2 or 3 a day each! It is such a blessing to be able to get them organic for such a low price.

40 lbs!! Now you are making me wonder if I ordered enough. Hopefully these last for the month! Can you imagine what it will be like when our boys get older?! How will we keep up!!
But, hey, it’s better than letting them have full reign on junk food, right?

Okay, I just checked the fruit drawer. I bought four 3lb. bags which I put in the drawer on Saturday night. We only have 2 bags left, and it’s only Thursday!! Looks like I’ll be ordering more! You might be right about the 40 lbs!

Have you seen that TLC is premiering a new reality show about extreme couponers! YEAH!

I don’t have TV, but I have seen clips on KCL. I’d love to watch one of those shows! Hopefully they will put them on the internet.

I love this! I love bacon, too! It is always around $2 at Waremart, so I always buy it there. I wish I would have had some of those $1/1 coupons, though! I have missed papers the last 2 weeks being sick.
As for my shopping this week, Safeway just isn’t cutting it with coupon match ups for me…most of my budget is going to the ever-budget denting, ever-necessary costco trip for chicken (I hate paying $2 a lb for frozen chicken, but it is SO MUCH BETTER than Safeway!!), fruit (depending on sales….usually bananas are awesomely priced and I am hoping they have pears, and spring mix salad which is $3.99 for a pound tub (better than Safeway or WinCo). I might have to grab a bag of frozen potstickers, too (a $10 bag usually gets us 3 meals or 2 big meals and an appetizer!). The boys LOVE them, and I like to make potsticker soup!
And of course, the Costco trips aligns with many other errands in Salem (because I would NEVER waste gas to go on a grocery run!)…these errands include my ULTRASOUND!!! Yay!!!
I absolutely hate discarding that wonderful $10/$50…I like how you described the love/hate relationship couponers have with it. A normal shopper would just be glad to knock of $10!
I like this apple thing, too! Hmmm….

Kristin!! I can’t WAIT to hear about the baby! I’ll be stalking FB!!

If you know people who have Costco memberships, you can get Tillamook cheese there for a pretty decent price. It’s under $11 for 5 pounds either shredded or in brick form. When I can’t find it on sale for under $4 for a 2 pound brick, that’s where I go to get it. Adam won’t let me get any other kind of cheese but Tillamook and we also go through a lot of it.

That’s a great idea! I hesitate because it’s a lot of money (when you only have $50 a week) to spend all at once. I am really tired of the Lucerne, though. It’s so soft that it crumbles when I slice it. UGH. I NEED Tillamook!!

Love, love, loooooove Azure Standard! I just started buying apples this month, but I have a feeling this will be a monthly “always in my cart” for me, too. I mean, 20 pounds of organic apples for $15?! Insanity!!! My kids love apples - and since I recently (finally) figured out my apple peeler/corer/slicer from Pampered Chef, the kids are loving apples even more! lol

I just placed another order for more apples. I have a feeling this is going to be a regular for me, too! Feels good to be doing this for for my kids, though! And, we LOVE that apple peeler/corer/slicer!! Canning season is so much easier!
