Cheap Chicken and Free Spinach!

13 April 2011 2,050 views 10 Comments

I totally wasn’t going to post this, because it’s not like it’s a super savings post or anything, but then I got to thinking about my non-couponing friends. Obviously I used to shop like them. I think of all of the grocery store inserts I completely ignored, especially in the days of no paychecks when my husband was first growing his business, and it makes me cringe to think about how much money I wasted just by not paying attention!!

So, this is for all my non-couponing friends. Nothing freakish here:

Safeway is having one day sales this week. Today it was frozen, boneless, skinless chicken breasts for $1.49/lb, or $5.96 a bag. This is definitely a stock-up-for-the-next-two-months price. I already had two bags in the freezer, so I stuck with 4 bags today.

Other highlights:

Fresh Express bagged salad and spinach is $1 this week. Use the .50/1 MC from 4/3 SS, plus the doubler (-.50 in Oregon and SW Washington) to get it for FREE! I’m definitely going back for more at the end of the week. We almost finished off a bag at dinner tonight and Grant has asked me to put it in his lunch!! Weird kid.

Bread - $1.69 (not stock-up!)

Milk - $2.49

Pinto Beans are 99¢/lb! Walmart is usually this price, but they increased prices the last couple of months, so I haven’t been buying. Argh. SO, I’m happy to see dried beans at a more reasonable price. I bet I could get them for cheaper at Winco, but I don’t want to drive all that way just for beans. I’m happy paying 99¢.

Del Monte canned veggies are 59¢ each. NOT a great price, by the way. I prefer to get my canned and frozen veggies for free. However, I’ve been participating the Coupon Connections’ Thoughtful Thursday email campaign, and Del Monte sent me three 50¢/1 coupons! SO, they were burning a hole in my pocket and I decided to use them today. With a doubler, I was able to get 4 cans for 9¢ each.

Carrots are $1.

That’s about it. I’m just stocking my freezer with REAL food!! :) For more match-ups, check out Frugal Living NW and Coupon Connections.

In other news - I’ve also been stocking my birthday present closet with cheap board games. It’s been fun!

AND, my boys are participating in Scholastic’s free book promotion. Of course, I just found out that it is one offer per household, so we’ll have to sort that out.

They are just so CUTE!!

Later this week:

Big bag of oranges for cheap tomorrow. I think it is an 8lb bag for $2.49.

Grapes are 99¢/lb on Friday and Tillamook Cheese is $5 (not a great price, but better than . . . a higher price?). Aaaand . . . that’s all I saw.

What am I missing?

What do you do with your pinto beans? I’ve never actually done anything besides crafts with them!

Homemade pinto beans are amazing. I first made them after reading how Jolyn did them on Budgets Are The New Black. Think about the filling of the bean burritos at Taco Bell. These are better. And easy.

Yep! I cook em up and eat em. We usually just cook them in the crock pot and only add a little bit of salt, that way I can use them in all kinds of dishes. I like to add them as filler to shredded chicken or ground beef dishes. You can hardly taste them, so it’s like I’m adding a bit of fiber! But, we also eat them like refried beans: http://onceamonthmom.com/homemade-black-refried-beans-recipe/

Oooh! Great spots! I considered the zucchini, and even picked one up, but then that mega-cheap part of me said, “Oh, but Kelleigh! You are going to have zucchini coming out your ears soon!” Soon, of course, being months from now. LOL! I’m sick. Still, I might go back and grab some!
Does your Ronzoni coupon say Do Not Double? The one that I have for the blue box is DND, but the other two (Quick Cook and American Beauty, I think) do not say that. However, my store doesn’t carry the quick cook or American beauty!! Argh. I’ll have to take another look!

If mine said do not double, I didn’t notice it, and neither did my cashiers. I used it twice with 2 different cashiers so….i don’t know.
