Late Night Grocery Shopping

5 August 2010 1,539 views 9 Comments

I went shopping late last night. I actually left the house a little after 10:30 because I didn’t want to have to go during the day and drag the boys around.  It is NOT easy going shopping with children.  As if I need to tell you that.

This is what I ended up with:

Look closely!  I’m still amazed.

Safeway is running a few promos, but I haven’t been terribly excited about them.  The one promo that I did do was the Buy 5/Save $5 on select Kraft/Oscar Mayer stuff.  The prices are NOT good on that promo, so don’t even think about doing it without some stellar coupons.  I had some stellar coupons (from Sunset magazine), so I did the deal.  I picked up 3 packages of lunch meat and 2 packages of cheese.  Even then, the deal was really not that great.  However, we needed this stuff, so whatever.

If you are wanting to do a great deal, get yourself access to 3 computers and do this free cheese scenario.  Of course, I only have one computer, so . . . {sob!} . . . I’ll have to live vicariously through you.

What I’m excited about:

5 loaves of bread for 99¢ each. This is an amazing price, and it does come around at least once a month.  I freeze the bread and LOVE knowing that we always have some.

Vlassic Pickles. We needed pickles in the worst way, and it was getting to the point that I was going to have to pay full price if I didn’t hit a sale soon.  This may not be the best deal, but, I bought 1 jar of spears and one squeeze bottle of relish and paid $2.29 (or, if you take into account a doubler, it was $1.79, but I don’t know which deals I should apply the doubler to!).

Yes, that is olive oil back there for $3.49.

Mayo. Oh, I have kinda been stocking up on Mayo lately.  I expect that there will be some sales around Labor Day, but I don’t want to miss out on what is happening right now.  I don’t even know if any coupon blogs have reported on this, but I was almost ready to pay full price and then figured out a great deal on mayo.  The Kraft Sandwich Shop Mayo (new stuff that I haven’t tried) is $1.99 each.

Here’s a scenario for free Kraft Sandwich Shop Mayonnaise (which I have only done once, since I need to try the stuff to decide which one I like best!):
Buy 2 Kraft Sandwich Shop squeeze bottles
Use $1.50/2 coupon from 6/20 (don’t know which insert it was, but it was on the same sheet as the dressing MC)
Use (2) $1/1 Safeway coupons from the Get Out and Grill book
Use a doubler for 50¢ off
FREE, plus a 2¢ moneymaker

Of course, I haven’t tried the Sandwich Shop, so I just need the regular stuff.  The deal is not as sweet, but I’ll take it since I’m not about to pay full price.  Here ya go:
Buy 2 Kraft Mayonnaise with Olive Oil in the squeeze bottle ($2.49 each)
Use $1.50/2 coupon from 6/20 (don’t know which insert it was, but it was on the same sheet as the dressing MC)
Use (2) $1/1 Safeway coupons from the Get Out and Grill book
Use a doubler for 50¢ off
Pay 98¢ for two bottles of mayo

SO, I did the Mayo deal again, since I needed to do it to be able to use one of the meat coupons.  It’s complicated.

More:

The C&W frozen veggies are $1.49 each WYB 5.  I had $1/2 printable MCs, plus there was a $2 ecoupon that mysteriously came off (even though I didn’t buy VanDeKamps . . . that’s for you, couponers).  I ended up paying 69¢ each for the bags.  OR, lower (49¢) if you include two doublers.  Decent price.

Ah, the tortillas are on sale again.  Not the best price, but I ended up getting 4 packs on Tuesday and 3 packs last night, and spent 75¢ each (when you factor in MCs that could be doubled and MCs that could not, plus one ecoupon.)  Not free, like we’ve had in the past, but we needed them.

The tuna is on sale with the in-ad coupon for 88¢ each.  Don’t do it.  I had a $1/2 coupon (which could be doubled), so I ended up paying 13¢ each.  That’s better.

Now, the really great deal was all of the produce.

The photo has $11.05 worth of produce in it.  Not gonna break the bank, and I’m certainly not going to complain about having to spend $$ on produce.  However, I had a $3 off a $10 purchase of produce coupon, plus a 55¢/2 avocados coupon (found on California wine bottles) plus a $1 off Eating Right lettuce coupon (from the Get Out and Grill Book??), and an in-ad coupon for the tomatoes.  I ended up paying $5.50.

BUT, the thing that made this whole trip cheaper (besides the myriad coupons) was that Safeway puts out a $10/$50 coupon at the beginning of each month!  SO, use that coupon, take full advantage of the doubler (for -$2) shop the sales and use coupons.

My total after club card savings was something around $78.  After all the coupons, it was $22.46

YES, this trip was a lot of work! I’m not used to trying to get my total up to $50.  I giggle, because it is actually HARD to get my total up to $50!!  Why do you think I bought 5 loaves of bread?  However, it was all worth it, since according to my receipt, I saved 77% last night.  Not bad!

Have you had any great late night shopping trips?

So they let you use the $10/$50 coupon first and then your additional coupons? My safeway uses all coupons first and then the $10 off coupon so does not make it worthwhile to me. I never spend that much at Safeway anymore either!

Did you see this post, Kristin?: http://www.frugallivingnw.com/store-deals/safeway/safeway-super-coupon-issue-finally-resolved/

It should apply to the $10/50, too.

HOWEVER, if you read the fine print on the $10/50 it clearly states that it is after all dairy, liquor, gift card purchases (etc.) and club card savings and club card coupons, but it does NOT say it is after manufacturer’s coupons. SO, at least there is that!

I agree, though. Sometimes it is just not worth it to try to get your subtotal all the way up to $50! Like I said, it is really hard!!

I had seen that but had forgotten. Thanks for reminding me. I will keep that in mind for next time they have one come out. Already spent my grocery money for the week:-)

I am excited to go shopping tomorrow night! You’ve gotten me even more pumped. I wish I had a produce coupon! I dug through my register coupons, but no…The Sunset mag coupons were cool. I love finding coupons in mags, but I do not have that one. I do have to get a bunch of stuff for Gavin’s birthday dinner and some morningstar stuff for Steve and chicken breasts, so the $10 off $50 will be awesome! I will have no problem getting there this time. I usually do have a hard time doing it, though! I may have to snag a cube of diet pepsi!! ;-)

    Have a great day, Kelleigh!!

Great shopping trip. I am floored you went to the store so late (10pm is my bedtime…LOL) And I also like your honesty in saying they weren’t the best deals. Still…looks like you scored to me!

The cheap bread always has high fructose corn syrup in it though! Does that one?

    Yes, it does.
